What is Merino Wool

What is Merino Wool?

Merino Wool comes from a prized breed of sheep called merino.  The wool is cut or shaved off the sheep through a process known as shearing.  Shearing doesn't hurt a sheep it is just like getting a hair cut.  My father was a shearer for may years and I spent many hours of my childhood in wool sheds (a barn where shearing takes place in New Zealand).  Merino sheep usually are shorn once a year in the spring by shearers who are very skilled.  A sheep is shorn efficiently and quickly without causing cuts or injury to the sheep.

Merino Wool Qualities:
  • Merino sheep are prized for their wool. New Zealand Merino sheep are the top of the list with its super fine Merino wool.
  • It is a natural renewal fiber and also sustainable environment friendly.
  • New Zealand merino is a wool super fine which makes it light & comfortable against your skin.
  • It is known as the softest wool in the world and non-irritating, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Merino absorbs water up to 1/3 of its weight which makes it odor resistant, but still retains warmth when wet.
  • It is flame retardant.
  • Warm in winter. Because merino wool has smaller fibers it traps body heat in which insulates the body.
  • Cool in summer by drawing moisture (sweat) away from the body, a phenomenon known as wicking.
  • Merino wool contains lanolin which has antibacterial properties.
  • Easy care.  Resistance to stains and is machine washable.
  • You will be able to enjoy your garment year after year as it is remarkably elastic and will bounce back.
